Sports inspired Bollywood movies you must see!
When it comes to Bollywood movies, nothing seems to be off-limits; whether it is a biopic, a fantasy film, an over-the-top drama or even a movie about sports. A story outlining an underdog’s journey or a movie about overcoming all odds to emerge victorious is the ideal setting for a Bollywood movie. With an added hint of drama and an enchanting music score, sports movies have gotten the attention of some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, actively vying for a role in these movies. Here, we take a look at some of the finest sports-inspired movies that shouldn’t be missed!
This Amir Khan starrer not only showcased tremendous achievement but also gave audiences a glimpse at the prevailing patriarchy in the sports industry. Inspired by the real-life story of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his passion to train his daughters to be wrestlers, this movie is one thrilling ride.
Hailing from a small town in India, the concept of girls entering the sports industry is unheard of, let alone wrestling. However, Phogat, who had relinquished his passion to win a gold for India in wrestling to take up a job, refused to let anything stand in the way of his daughters’ journey. The girls, Babita and Geeta, although rebellious at first, go on to win many accolades and achievements at National and International levels, breaking the traditional shackles placed on girls in the industry. The added glimpses of red tape within the industry as well as the struggle of the family, give this path-breaking movie a heart-warming angle.
M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
Cricket is a religion in India, and any story involving this sport is likely to create some buzz to say the least. However, when the journey is of a rebel and an underdog that defied all odds to emerge as one of India’s most lauded athletes, the excitement increases. The film starred Sushant Singh Rajput as Dhoni and takes the audience through the life of the superstar from a young age. Dhoni’s journey has been anything but easy with financial troubles at a young age, the disadvantage of not hailing from a big city and a whole lot more. However, when opportunities came his way, this man was ready and willing and has emerged to be one of Cricket’s most loved icons.
Chak De India
The concept of women in sports has never been taken seriously, and a women’s hockey team probably had a laughable audience to begin with. The movie itself may not have garnered much attention, such is the stigma against women in sports, if it wasn’t helmed by the Baadshah of Bollywood himself – Shah Rukh Khan. Playing the role of a cantankerous former player, Khan is brought on to mentor the women’s team as a coach. The story shows the journey of the coach and the team, not just professionally, but also personally adding the perfect emotional hook to the film. Backed with great acting and memorable speeches all culminating in an epic win, make this one of Bollywood’s most beloved sports movies.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination – nothing does this statement more justice than the story of Milkha Singh. India’s revolutionary athlete, who came to be affectionately known as the Flying Sikh, showcased tremendous effort and dedication in his journey to be India’s premier athlete. Even though the Olympic Medal may have been missed, the journey and dedication is so inspirational, you just find the motivation you need to renew your gym membership. Brilliantly depicted by Farhan Akhtar, this movie is a must watch!
A woman boxer from India hoping to go pro – this statement would be considered a joke before the legendary Mary Kom. Beating all odds, including poor training facilities, societal dogma, gender discrimination and a gamut of other odds, Mary Kom emerged to be one of the world’s most inspirational athlete journeys as an Olympic champion. Starring the ever-talented Priyanka Chopra in the lead, this movie showcases the backstory and challenges that Mary Kom had to overcome before she became a household name. The movie was a commercial and critical success that also netted itself a National Award.
Sachin: A Billion Dreams
If cricket is a religion in India, Sachin is God! A biopic about the legend himself, this movie was a brilliant display of Sachin’s personal and professional journey from a young age till the time he retired in 2013. Taking audiences behind the scenes of the centuries and the unbeatable technique on the pitch to the challenges and celebrations in his personal life, this movie is one of the finest Bollywood movies and one you shouldn’t miss.
An athlete’s dedication to his sport can often come in the way of his personal life as showcased in Salman Khan starrer – Sultan. The movie depicts the struggle to balance one’s professional and personal life. The dedication to win a gold costs Sultan the chance to be at his wife’s side during the delivery of their son who was born with a severe anaemic condition and couldn’t survive. What compounds this grief is that he may have had a fighting chance with Sultan present as his blood type was the same, a rare O negative.
The film showcases the sense of grief and loss faced by the athlete and how it completely dismantles him from his game, even costing him the love of his life. Sultan then focuses on raising funds to open a blood bank in honour of his son and this is where he is reunited with wrestling. He returns to the very sport that was the most significant part of his life till he lost his son and then became the very avenue for him to reclaim his lost dignity, respect and even his love!
Action, drama, love interest, music – all these are quintessential Bollywood elements. But the added twist of an overwhelming athlete’s journey, makes it all the more wholesome. Often displaying a message of dedication and perseverance to overcome all odds and emerge victorious, these are some of Bollywood’s finest Sports movies!
